Germany's Hard Water Problem
Germany has some of the hardest tap water in Europe. In cities like Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and large parts of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the water hardness frequently exceeds 21°dH (very hard). Over time, calcium and magnesium minerals deposit inside pipes, hot water cylinders, and appliances.
Limescale build-up gradually narrows the internal diameter of your pipes, reducing water pressure and flow. In severe cases, pipes can become almost completely blocked. Hot water pipes are particularly susceptible because limescale deposits faster at higher temperatures.
Professional pipe descaling removes these deposits without damaging the pipe. We use mechanical descaling, high-pressure jetting, or chemical descaling agents depending on the pipe material and degree of calcification.
When Should You Descale Your Pipes?
If you live in a hard water area of Germany and notice reduced water pressure at taps or shower heads, longer heating times for your boiler, or visible white deposits around fixtures – your pipes likely need descaling. Waiting too long can lead to complete blockages or pipe damage that requires full replacement.
As a preventative measure, pipes in very hard water areas benefit from professional descaling every 3-5 years. This is especially important for older buildings where original copper pipes may already have significant deposit accumulation.
After descaling, we advise on water softeners or in-line scale inhibitors that can slow the re-accumulation of limescale and protect your appliances. Installing a whole-house water softener is often the most cost-effective long-term solution in very hard water areas.
How Pipe Descaling Works
-
Assessment
We assess the degree of calcification using pressure testing and, where needed, camera inspection of the pipes.
-
Choose Method
Based on the pipe material and deposit thickness, we select mechanical, high-pressure, or chemical descaling.
-
Descaling Treatment
The selected method removes limescale deposits thoroughly without damaging the pipe walls.
-
Pressure Test & Advice
We test the restored water pressure and advise on prevention measures to reduce future build-up.
